Treatment of advanced prostatic carcinoma with LHRH analogue

A series of 26 patients with advanced prostatic cancer was treated with an LHRH analogue (Buserelin), 6 had advanced local disease while in 20 it had metastasized. Treatment goals were alleviation of bone pain and of symptoms of urinary obstruction. Obstructive symptoms improved in most of the patients following therapy and in 5 out of 6 (83.3%) it was possible to remove an indwelling catheter. 4 of 5 patients on continuous analgetic treatment became pain-free. Serum testosterone levels declined to castration levels in all patients, while serum prolactin levels rose markedly. Acid phosphatase returned to normal in 6 of those with elevated levels, and bone scans demonstrated regression of skeletal metastases in 2 cases. The only side-effect was hot flushes which occurred in 10 patients. This promising hormonal treatment modality has given encouraging results.
