Brucella antibodies in Sudanese blood donors

Of 1508 volunteer blood donors bled at Soba University Hospital Blood Bank, Khartoum, 18 (1.2%) possessed antibodies to Brucella sp. The implications of this are discussed, and it is suggested that in areas where there is a significant risk of brucella infection, apparently healthy blood donors may need to be screened routinely to exclude the risk of transmitting brucellosis by transfusion.
