In Brazil, 14 cats showed signs of depression, pyrexia, respiratory signs, rhinitis and conjunctivitis five days after 7 cats were introduced into the cattery. Two cats also showed signs of ulcerative glossitis and one of these died. PM examination of this cat showed interstitial pneumonia and hyperplasia of the bronchiolar, alveolar and peribronchial glandular epithelium. 24-48 hours after inoculation with oculonasal samples from 10 cats, a feline kidney cell line showed a cytopathic effect, which was characterised by rounding and loss of cells from the glass surface. Six samples were positive. Calicivirus was identified using serum neutralization tests. This is the first isolation of feline calicivirus from cats with respiratory disease with a high morbidity and low mortality in South America.
