The effect of inhalation of citral and geraniol on the output and composition of respiratory tract fluid

Citral and geraniol were volatilized and administered by steam inhalation to urethanized rabbits arranged for the collection of respiratory tract fluid. The volatile oils produced an increase in the volume output and soluble mucus content and a decrease in the specific gravity of respiratory tract fluid by the (apparently) local action of doses which yielded no detectable odour to the inhaled air. The expectorant action became progressively less marked as the concentration of the volatile agent was increased and disappeared when the odour became pungent. The results suggest that steam inhalation of small amounts of citral or geraniol could provide a useful inhalant mucotropic action.
