We studied the leukocyte pattern of 100 patients with renal lithiasis submitted to ESWL in orer to assess the influence of urinary tract infection in these patients. A rise in leukocyte count was observed in the 4 groups of patients with or without infection, indicating that the only factor common to all patients was stress. We analyzed patient leukocyte response to this factor. Correct prophylactic and antibiotic therapy is recommended in these patients as well as adequate psychologic preparation and sedation as general means to overcome stress.
