Fifty-four patients underwent contrast ventriculography and first pass radionuclide angiocardiography for determination of left ventricular end-diastolic volume (EDV) and end-systolic volume (ESV). Radionuclide angiocardiography was performed in right anterior oblique supine position in 26 patients (group I) and in anterior sitting position in 28 other patients (group II). In group I patients, the EDV and ESV determined by the radionuclide method were 212 .+-. 97 ml and 140 .+-. 87 ml (mean .+-. SD), respectively; whereas those by the contrast method were 170 .+-. 88 ml and 103 .+-. 68 ml. In group II patients, the EDV and ESV by the radionuclide method were 139 .+-. 56 ml and 78 .+-. 60 ml, respectively; while those by the contrast method were 119 .+-. 51 ml and 61 .+-. 54 ml. The correlation coefficients between the radionuclide and the contrast method were 0.98 (SE = 0.0365, p < 0.05) and 0.97 (SE = 0.0397, p < 0.05) for EDV and ESV respectively in group I and 0.09 (SE = 0.0774, p < 0.05) and 0.94 (SE = 0.0568, p < 0.05) in group II. The intra- and inter-observer differences in determining left ventricular volumes by the radionuclide technique were minimal. Thus, left ventricular volumes can be easily determined by the first pass radionuclide technique.
