Ketones are a supplementary means of transporting the energy in free fatty acids and variations in enzyme levels in the tissues lead to their differential utilization. Brain can be shown to use ketones as well as glucose for fuel. Ketones can also act as metabolic signals, increased concentrations having hypoglycaemic and antilipolytic actions. A moderate amount of hyperketonaemia can be considered physiological in situations such as starvation and exercise.
