Indirect and direct measurements of arterial pressure in patients with atrial fibrillation

In 18 patients with artial fibrillation the value of the arterial blood pressure by the direct method was compared with that obtained indirectly (by Kototkoffs auscultatory method and ultrasonically). The highest values of systolic and diastolic pressure were obtained by the direct method (204 .+-. 36 and 113 .+-. 21 mm Hg or 27.13 and 15.03 kPa respectively). Using the auscultatory method of Korotkoff significantly lower values were obtained (153 .+-. 24 and 93 .+-. 14 mm Hg or 20.35 and 12.37 kPa respectively). The ultrasonic method gave results of systolic pressure determination similar to the measurement by Korotkoffs method (152 .+-. 25 mm Hg or 20.21 kPa). The authors stress that the indirect methods give results below the actual ones in the measurements of the arterial blood pressure in patients with atrial fibrillation.
