Cerebral cysticercosis. A disease to suspect in recent travelers or immigrants

The case is described of a 36-year-old Guatemalan woman who presented in New Jersey, USA, after an episode of generalized tonic-clonic convulsions. She had been in the USA but had visited Guatemala every other year. Cerebral cysticercosis was diagnosed by computed tomography (CT) and ELISA. Praziquantel was given orally at 50 mg/kg daily for 15 days and corticosteroids were given iv concomitantly. Follow up CT at 6 months showed a marked decrease in the number of cysts.
