A new dentifrice (Rembrandt, Den-Mat Corporation, Santa Maria, CA) containing chelating agents and a proteolytic enzyme has been developed in order to prevent and remove extrinsic staining nonabrasively. The capacity of this dentifrice was evaluated in a clinical double-blind study. One hundred eight-two adults with a history of extrinsic tooth discoloration were selected for the study. Presence and degree of discoloration on the facial surfaces of the upper and lower incisors were registered on the basis of a clinical score and on color photographs in accordance with a stain index system. The subjects were given instructions regarding the amount of toothpaste and type of brush to be employed, and the frequency and duration of brushing. Staining was assessed after 1 week, 4 weeks, and 3 months. The results showed no visilbe effect on well-established stain. However, a slight preventive effect against new staining could be observed.
