The reservoir effect of an oil in water microemulsion was examined by permeability studies. Prednisone was used as a lipophilic drug. Three o/w microemulsions containing a fixed amount of lecithin as surfactant and different percentages of cosurfactant (butanol) were employed. The permeability constants obtained from microemulsions were 4-5 times lower than the ones obtained from solutions. The amount of alcohol influenced the diffusion rate of the drug.
