Retroviral vectors for introduction of genes into mammalian cells

Recent progress in the use of recombinant retroviruses for the introduction of genes into mammalian cells, including consideration of the ways in which genes are integrated into the proviral backbone and the development of helper viruses and cell lines for packaging recombinant retroviral vectors, are reviewed. A method for gene transfer into bone marrow cells is presented, and the use of other cell types in such experiments is described. The current and potential uses of retroviral vectors in carcinogenesis studies, as developmental markers and for gene therapy are outlined.
