The influence of education age at sexual debut use of intrauterine device and number of sex partners on tubal factor infertility

Infertility has a complex pathogenesis, and the causes of infertility may be found in the female, male or be linked with both partners. This is a study of 240 females couples registered at Rikshospitalet, Norway in 1982, for investigation and treatment of infertility. We have analysed age at sexual debut, age at attempt of pregnancy, number of sex partners, educational level and contraceptive use as possible risk factors for one predominant cause of infertility: tubal factor infertility in the female due to adhesions after pelvic infections. We find that compared to patients with other causes of infertility, females with tubal factor infertility had significantly more sex patients and more frequent use of an intrauterine device. We also conform that pelvic infections often are unrecognized until the couple seek infertility investigation. We discuss the necessity of prevention of sexually transmitted disease and infertility in family planning and sex education counseling.
