On the basis of studies in the Kaluga region in 1973-76, an economic evaluation was made of the value of the wood increment and of various medicinal materials in a number of Scots pine, Norway spruce, birch, aspen and alder forest types. The medicinal materials considered included foliage of Vaccinium vitis-idaea, Convallaria majalis and Ledum palustre, the fruits of Oxycoccus spp. and Vaccinium myrtillus and the bark of Rhamnus spp. The results (tabulated) show that in all the forest types considered except for the better birch/hazel and birch/lime types, the mean value of the medicinal materials harvested was several times greater than that of the mean annual wood increment: 10 or 20 times greater in the poorest forest types (sphagnum pine types and alder carrs).
