This paper reports the results of a study of correlation between sex steroids and bone loss in 169 climacteric women aged 44-63. They were divided into 11 groups according to the menopausal year. Plasma levels of FSH, LH, E2, E1, P and T were measured with RIA. Bone mineral contents of the radius were determined with the technique of photon absorptiometry. Plasma calcium was determined with EDTA. Plasma phosphate and alkaline phosphatase were determined with photometry at the same time. The results are as follows: 1. In the premenopausal stage the ovarian function begins to decline, E2, E1, P, T decrease and FSH, LH begin to rise. In the post-menopausal period the ovarian function further declines, FSH and LH further rise and E2, E1, P, T, decline rapidly. Three to four years after menopause the ovarian function is relatively stable; the levels of gonadotropine and sex steroids are relatively steady; and 2. After menopause the bone absorption is more obvious than bone formation, which is due to the mechanism of bone loss after menopause. It is concluded that lower estrogen level is the main cause of the post-menopausal bone loss.
