Efficacy of hysterosalpingography in evaluating tubal and peritubal disease in 200 patients with infertility

Assessment of tubal and peritubal disease by hysterosalpingography was correlated with laparoscopy in 200 women being evaluated for infertility. Radiographic signs of abnormality included tubal dilatation, blockage, salpingitis isthmica nodosa, and "clumping" defined as poor delineation and crowding of the tubal ampulla. Overall radiographic sensitivity and specificity was 81% and 75%, respectively. The clumping sign was moderately successful in detecting peritubal adhesions with a positive predictive value of 67%. HSG most accurately detected tubal blockage and blockage associated with peritubal adhesion. The main advantages of HSG compared to laparoscopy is its ready availability, less cost and no need for general anesthesia.
