Outbreak of gastroenteritis due to Salmonella typhimurium in Solapur

An outbreak of gastroenteritis was investigated. Thirty eight children (< 5 years) with acute gastroenteritis were admitted to the hospital, of which one with associated signs of encephalitis like syndrome died before bacteriological investigation was complete. Six toxigenic strains of Salmonella typhimurium were isolated. All showed multiresistance but were uniformly sensitive to neomycin. This helped to bring the outbreak in control.
