Vertical starch gel electrophoresis analysis of the blood of a random sample of 50 Nigerian (Yoruba) children did not show any increases in the hemoglobin A2 fraction. The significance of hemoglobin A2 in the diagnosis of thalassemia is discussed. It is suggested that the thalassemia gene probably occurs infrequently if at all in southern Nigeria and that it is therefore unlikely to affect the population dynamics of the genes for hemoglobins S and C to any appreciable degree as it has done in the case of the former gene in the Mediterranean region.
