Vaccine efficacy, the ability of a vaccine to prevent disease effectively, is an important measure of quality of an immunization programme and is an indicator that potent vaccines are being properly administered. Although sophisticated epidemiological and laboratory methods exist for determining vaccine efficacy, a simple screening method for field evaluation is described which may be useful for immunization programme managers in India. It is recommended that this screening method for estimation of vaccine efficacy be more widely used to monitor and assess immunization programme quality.
