The concentrations of soil standards must be known to the required degree of accuracy. They must be demonstrably homogeneous in the smallest aliquot needed. They must contain the problems or interferences causing difficulties in the method, and they must be chemically stable and physically reproducible.A procedure is presented for synthesizing a high-quality soil standard that can be verified by analysis. The spiking procedure, control of particle size and sample agitation were found to be important factors in producing a homogeneous standard.
