A survey of 40 consecutive cases of retinal detachment which received silicone band encircling surgery in the Dept. of Ophthalmology, Kaohsiung Medical College, Taiwan, from May 1983 to Dec. 1986 revealed the following: 1. Anatomic retinal reattachment was achieved in 30 cases (75%). 2. Postoperative corrected visual acuity was better than 0.1 as found in 28 cases (70%) and better than 0.4 in 11 cases (27.5%). 3. One of the major factors resulting in failure of reattachment was proliferative vitreoretinopathy which was found in 8 of the cases studied. 4. Major post-operative complications were proliferative vitreoretinopathy (42.5%) and vitreous opacity (22.5%).
