A study of the survival of 160 demented patients in a Brisbane, Queensland, Australia nursing home of a teaching hospital has been carried out. It was found that the length of stay in hospital after diagnosis was six years. This figure was obtained by using the survival analysis method of Kaplan and Meier. As the progress and presentation of arteriosclerotic and senile dementia are usually inseparable, and as they may co-exist, they have been grouped together.
