Possible potentiated sulphonamide and detomidine interactions

Three horses were either sedated or anaesthetized with detomidine (6.5-60 micro g/kg) before intravenous injection with trimethoprim/sulphadoxine at the manufacturer's recommended dose rate. Within 5 minutes all the horses became distressed, two subsequently collapsed and died and one horse recovered within approximately 10 minutes. As severe dysrhythmias, hypotension, apnoea and also death have been reported in horses given intravenous trimethoprim/sulphadoxine during or immediately following halothane anaesthesia, it is recommended that intravenous potentiated sulphonamides should not be used in anaesthetised or sedated horses.
