Distribution and characteristics of mast cells in the ovaries of immature rats of 5, 10, 20 and 30 days of age and their responses to PMSG, PMSG followed by hCG and histamine treatments at day 20 were studied histochemically. Mast cells wee mainly present in the vicinities of blood vessels in the hilum, stroma and wall of atretic follicles. These cells were counted in 280 .mu.m portions of ovarian tissues on 40 sections of 7 .mu.m thickness. The ovaries at day 5 contained higher number of mast cells than at day 10, 20 and 30. The cells showing variable shapes were distinguished into two types, i.e. compact and degranulating. The compact type occurred in higher proportions in the ovary irrespective of the age of rats. Administration of histamine to 20 day old rats had no effect on the total mast cell counts which was significantly reduced by PMSG and hCG treatments.
