Effect of extradural marcaine analgesia on the phagocytic activity of granulocytes in the NBT test

The granulocyte system was studied in 60 patients in good general condition operated-on under extradual analgesia comparing the results with those in a control group of 30 subjects. In the assessment of the immunity of these patients the changes were analysed of granulocyte pools. For the study selected clinical test were used: adrenaline test and the skin window test of Rebuck. In the control group identical tests were done, without operation or extradural analgesia. On the basis of the obtained results a modulating effect was noted of the extradural analgesia on the granulocyte system. These results indicate that extradural analgesia is recognized by the immune system as an "infection". However, the observed mobilization of granulocyte reserves seems to counterbalance the negative effect of extradural analgesia on immunity.
