Dentargam, Germadent- and Duragam-amalgam surfaces were investigated after different treatment on the frequency of the elements silver, tin, copper and mercury by means of electron micro beam analysis. Burnishing and polishing led to a reduction of mercury and to an increase of the copper amount in the case of higher copper containing amalgams. Dentargam-amalgam do not react while surface treating depending on the mercury distribution, the amounts of silver and tin however, changes. Burnishing and polishing are urgently required as component of the amalgam filling therapy.
