Loss of Compact Bone Due to Menopause

By means of a densitometric-radiographic method of quantitative bone mineral determination in the shaft of the radius in 112 premenopausal and 91 postmenopausal women, including 35 castrates, a definite loss of bone mineral was shown to take place in the castrate and postmenopausal groups. This demineralization seemed to be steadily progressive relative to the number of years after the menopause. Such mineral loss did not occur in the premenopausal women age-matched with castrates, and since diet, parity and length of breastfeeding were comparable for both groups, it was concluded that in-volutional osteoporosis in females is not primarily due to calcium deficiency or the aging process as such, but to loss or decreased production of ovarian hormones.
