The results of a literature review, studies of plant morphology and histology, and chemical studies which identified the components of the essential oils (28 of which were recorded for the first time in the genus Piper), provided evidence that P. hancei var. squamiglanduferum (often considered to be P. hancei var. hancei) has obvious differences to P. hancei var. hancei. P. hancei var. squamiglanduferum has glandular scales on the adaxial surface of the leaves; it is the only Piper sp. reported to have these scales.
