In 1989 the HIV seroprevalence in 181 female prostitutes in Tegucigalpa was 4%. Specific treponemal antibodies were found in 90 (50%). Of the 181 women 31 (17%) had active syphilis, as judged by a positive Venereal Disease Research Laboratory test and/or rapid plasma reagin test. Four women had antibodies to both HIV and Treponema pallidum.Hilary Richardson.
