Influence of emetine on the isolated rabbit atria

The influence of emetine HC1 was studied on the spontaneous frequency and the "effective" refractory period in the isolated auricles of the rabbit. The substance was found to depress the spontaneous frequency of the auricles and to prolong the effective refractory period. The conduction velocity was measured with 2 extracellular electrodes disposed at 1 cm of each other on the conduction pathway and also with an intracellular microelectrode which impaled the preparation at different places. Emetine was found to depress the conduction velocity. No interaction was found between the influence of emetine and that of a change in stimulation frequency on this velocity.
