Registration of patients excreting enteritis salmonella as chronic carriers in relation to antibiotic therapy

In the course of the bacteriological surveillance of children after a hospital outbreak of S. montevideo we observed a high percentage of persistent excretion. Antibiotic therapy prior to and during the salmonellosis might be the reason for the prolonged excretion. Therefore, the reastrictive use of antibiotics is emphasized. The registration as chronic carrier according to the regulations in the GDR needs a revision for enteritis salmonellae in connection with antibiotic therapy.
