Evaluation of treatment at the Copenhagen County Hospital, Stolpegård. A study of psychotherapeutic effects

The Copenhagen County Hospital, Stolpegard, is a psychotherapeutically oriented day and night hospital for patients with mild mental disorders and carriers out a considerable amount of purely ambulant activity. During the period 24.11.1983 to 20.03.1984, 545 patients were referred there, including 438 to preliminary interview for whom a regular psychiatric record was established in a comparable manner. After a varied waiting period, 348 patients entered into treatment either with individual therapy, group therapy, or couple/family therapy. Of these, 286 patients completed the treatment, and 62 dropped out. A Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was registered at the beginning and at the end of treatment. Compared with the changes in a waiting list control group of 50 patients, the treatment results were essentially, significantly better. General improvement was found amongst 81% of the patients who had completed the treatment, 79% were improved with regard to symptoms/problems. If those patients who dropped out at an early phase of treatment are included, then the improvement percentage falls to 61%. The situation of a total of 6% of the patients deteriorated, but only two patients became psychotic. It was not possible to add potentially prognostic hindering factors to, respectively, a social burden index, a psychiatric burder index, or a treatment acceptablitily index, but treatment results were reviewed in various contexts.
