Patients' access to hospital case records in a special psychotherapeutic hospital

The Danish legislation concerning publicity in administration gave all patients the right to read or have access to copies of hospital case notes after 1.1.1987. This retrospective investigation reveals that, in our hospital with patients suffering from minor psychiatric disorders, only 8.4% desired to see their case records. So far, the new Danish legistation does not appear to have influenced the psychotherapeutic environment nor the content of the case records. Further investigations in other psychiatric departments with more widespread diagnostic profiles appear to be necessary to evaluate the effect of the law on psychotherapeutic treatment in institutions.
