The authors propose the name non-progressive atrophic rhinitis (AR) for the slight to severe and usually transient turbinate atrophy in which no toxigenic Pasteurella multocida is found, when there are no clinical signs and there is no obvious growth retardation. They propose the name progressive atrophic rhinitis for the infection with toxigenic P. multocida (capsular serotype D and A strains) characterized by shortening or distortion of the snout, sneezing, nasal discharge and epistaxis. Progressive AR is often accompanied by reduced growth rates in severe cases. Many other conditions contribute to the expression of progressive AR. It is suggested that health monitoring programmes should be based on clinical inspections for signs of progressive AR supported by laboratory tests for toxigenic P. multocida.
