Aflatoxin detoxification in animal feeds by ammoniation is reviewed. Regulations controlling aflatoxins in feeds, in the USA and world-wide and the permitted uses of decontamination/ammoniation procedures are discussed. Specific decontamination procedures and research studies, including effects of ammoniation on feed composition and by-products, and safety evaluation, incorporating animal feeding studies and toxicity of decontamination reaction products, are presented. It is concluded that there is overwhelming support for the efficacy and safety of ammoniation as a practical solution to aflatoxin detoxification in animal feeds.
