Experimentally-induced telepathic dreams: two studies using EEG-REM monitoring technique

The possibility of experimentally inducing telepathic perception in the dreams of sleeping Ss was examined under conditions which controlled against ordinary sensory communication. EEG monitoring of periods of rapid eye movement and emerging Stage I sleep was utilked for the collection of dream protocols from 12 Ss. Two agents (one male, one female) selected target materials by random procedures from among a pool of twelve reproductions of famous paintings. They attempted to influence Ss' dreams so as to introduce correspondences between the dreams and targets. Ss at the close of their sessions ranked the potential targets against their recall of the night's dreams with the result that the actual targets were ranked in favorable positions more often than expected by chance (p=.05). Additional ranking done by three outside judges indicated better results from Ss working with the male agent (p .05). The male agent and the best of the 12 Ss were then paired for a seven-night study of parallel design. S made his rankings (of targets against typed transcripts of his dreams and associations) at the completion of the study rather than each night. He ranked the actual targets significantly more favorably than expected by chance (p=0.5). The rankings of the three judges were significant at the .001 level. The results were evaluated by a specially adapted two-way analysis of variance. The statistical results of these studies as well tas the volume of striking anecdotal evidence of correspondences produced in them suggest that telepathic effects in dreams are experimentally demonstrable. Further and broader investigations of these phenomena are now in process.
