Surface and deep electro-encephalograms were recorded in rats under the effects of Tincture of Valerian, Valeramide, Valpotriates and Valium. The benzodiazepine Valium was chosen as a point of reference because of the results of behavioural tests and varying stages of sleep that it produces in experimental animals. The results of this preliminary screening suggest that in appropriate dosages, two of the drugs studied are preferable to Valium because their sedative action is practically free from the unwanted effect of drownsiness.
