The circadian rhythms of arterial blood pressure and heart rate were studied in 50 subjects divided in four groups, normotensive, untreated hypertensive, hypertensive treated with a calcium channel blocker or a beta adrenergic receptor blocking agent respectively. Cosinor analysis of the results showed that the patients treated with the calcium channel blocker exhibited a significantly higher amplitude of the circadian rhythms for both systolic and diastolic arterial blood pressure than the other groups. This finding might be important for the long-term treatment of hypertensive patients.
