Transmission electron microscopy in the differential diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma using fine-needle aspirates

Ultrastructure of tumor cells in fine needle aspirates of 21 non-Hodgkin's malignant lymphomas has been described. The majority of tumor cells was found dispersed in the smears. There were numerous ribosomes in the cytoplasm of tumor cells. Basement membranes, neurosecretory granules, melanosomes, large pools of glycogen were not found. The analysis of ultrastructure of tumor cells helped to diagnose malignant lymphoma in 11 aspirates in which it could not be distinguished from histogenetically different tumors in the light microscope only.
