Acute systemic toxic reactions caused by hornet stings

The case report is given of a 6-year-old boy who after some 60 stings from Vespa orientalis developed acute intravascular haemolysis, thrombocytopenia, rhabdomyolysis, toxic hepatitis and acute renal failure, in addition to an allergenic reaction. Peritoneal dialysis was administered on post-hospitalization (p-h) days 2, 8 and 10, after which his urine output rose and his blood urea and serum creatinine fell. He was asymptomatic at time of discharge on p-h day 26 and on follow-up 1 month later.
