Temocillin: comparative in vitro activity against gram-negative clinical isolates

The activity of temocillin, a 6-.alpha.-methoxy penicillin derivative, was tested against 841 non selected gram-negative clinical isolates and compared with the activity of other antibiotics using a disk diffusion technique. While temocillin demonstrated no activity against P. aeruginosa and A. calcoaceticus as expected, nearly 100 percent of all remaining isolates proved sensitive. The drug's antibacterial pattern against Enterobactericeae was similar to that found for ceftazidime, cefotoxime, aztreonam, and thienamycin, and better than that of cefuroxime and gentamicin. These results indicate that temocillin is a rational therapeutic choice when a narrow-spectrum approach is warranted for severe hospital- or community-acquired gram-negative infections.
