Activities of thymidine kinase and disaccharidases (lactase, sucrase and maltase) were estimated in whole tissue homogenates of jejunal biopsies from 15 normal children, 4 with non-specific enteropathy (NSE) and 7 with subtotal villus atrophy (STVA) on routine histology. The disaccharidases were decreased in children with STVA (p < 0.01) and thymidine kinase was increased in children with NSE (p < 0.05) and STVA (p < 0.01). Comparison of thymidine kinase/lactase and thymidine kinase/sucrase ratios clearly delineated the damaged mucosa from normal mucosa.
