Periarticular inflammation of the ankles: clinical variant of Löfgren's syndrome

Fifteen patients with a peculiar syndrome consisting in swelling of both ankles usually associated with local heat and redness were evaluated. The results of the performed studies and the clinical outcome were undistinguishable from those found in subacute sarcoidosis (Lofgren's syndrome). They were different only in the absence of the characteristic erythema nodosum lesions. In the reviewed literature one single similar previous report was found. It is discussed that periarticular inflammation of both ankles may be an equivalent of erythema nodosum, and that in patients with that clinical syndrome the possibility of subacute sarcoidosis should be considered.
