The Chipko Movement of popular resistance to harmful logging practices originated in 1973 in the Chanoli district of Uttar Pradesh. Women proved ultimately more conscious than men of the ecological role of trees in preventing erosion and flooding, from which they suffered. Women's increasingly active involvement in this movement has entailed a new relationship with the men of their communities. It aims to provoke a reappraisal of government forest policies in the region.
