Three papers, based on six months' research in Kgatleng District, Botswana, present the results of an empirical enquiry on aspects of women's lives: their role in development (in a district of high male out-migration, with many men working in South African mines and factories); their achievements in schools (girls form only a small majority of pupils in primary school in Botswana, are gradually overtaken by boys in secondary school and are outnumbered by two to one at university); and their health (in relation to family planning and to nutritional differences between girls and boys).
