The paper reports on the results of a study on the bactericidal antibody levels of patients with meningococcal meningitis and healthy population from 1981 to 1985. The serum bactericidal antibody level of group A N. meningitidis was negative (titer less 1: 2) in 88.9% of the patients in acute phase of the disease, while the convalesent sera antibody level showed significant increase, its geometric mean titer (GMT) was 1:463.73. Before the epidemic period, GMT of the antibody of healthy population was 1: 1.40, and the positive rate of antibody was 21.76%. This result showed that about 80% of the population were susceptible to the infection of N. meningitidis. During the epidemic period, the antibody GMT was 1:4.90 in the rural population, and 40% of them the antibody titer was 1:8 or greater, showed that the population had produced the antibody from natural infection. His suggested that these results may be used to indicate the susceptibility and immunity of population.
