An epidemic of acute septic meningitis appeared in and around Agra. This preliminary report is of 80 cases admitted in S.N. Hospital, Agra from January 28th to March 19th, 1985. Diagnosis of septic meningitis was based upon the acute onset with high grade fever, headache, irritability, altered consciousness, presence of signs of meningeal irritation and CSF reports for microscopic, biochemical, smear and culture examination. Most of the cases reported were from the Agra district and male:female ratio was 2.9:1.1. Maximum cases belonged to 11-12 yr age group. Fever was the commonest symptom and in most of the cases, signs of meningeal irritation were present. CSF showed biochemical and microscopic abnormality in all the cases. Penicillin C and chloramphenicol were the sheet anchor in the management of meningococcal meningitis having a recovery rate of 86.2%.
