Median preoperative weight loss in 34 controls 54 to 87 years old was 8 kg and in 32 study patients 56 to 88 years old was 7.5 kg. Study patients received total parenteral nutrition (40 +or- 3 kcal/kg and nitrogen 0.3 +or- 0.02 g/kg daily). After operation 10 study patients had at least 1 complication compared with 19 in the control group.
