Prospects and problems for malaria vaccination: an African perspective

This review outlines the progress that has been made in developing various types of vaccines against malaria and considers certain special problems that may complicate the development and use of an effective malaria vaccine in Africa. These include antigenic diversity amongst African Plasmodium falciparum isolates, the value of a vaccine administered to malnourished children, the effect of immunosuppression due to concurrent infections, high birth rates, geographical differences in immunity to malaria, as well as the lack of an adequate medical infrastructure to support mass immunisation campaigns in many parts of Africa.
