The sciatic and brachial nerve plexuses from a chicken experimentally exposed to MD herpesvirus, JM strain, were examined with the electron microscope. Ultrastructural changes in both nerves indicated activation of Schwann cells and degeneration of some lymphoid cell elements. Neuronal damage also was observed. The brachial plexus contained Schwann cells, immature lymphoid cells, and degenerated lymphoblastoid cells (so-called "Mark's disease cells") with characteristic intranuclear herpes-virus particles. No virus particles were found in similar cells in the sciatic plexus.
